A man fell nine stories to his death Monday night at the Hard Rock Hotel in Las Vegas, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reports.

The man was identified as James Leslie Herman, a 38-year-old restaurateur executive who'd lived in Vail Valley for the last 15 years.

Initially, investigators thought the fall was a suicide, the story says. But they later found out that Herman had climbed on a railing and lost his balance.

The obituary in the Vail Daily newspaper says that Herman - with "his unmistakable Boston accent" - worked at Savory Group.

"A long-term, valued team member at Savory Group, Jim Herman's friends and colleagues are mourning his tragic death," the piece says.

Herman spearheaded the Restaurant Avondale project from its inception at the Westin Riverfront Resort and Spa at Beaver Creek Mountain.
